Welcome
Green Island is one of Australia’s windiest destinations - see the graph below from the Bureau of Meteorology.

During the FNQ winter months steady winds in excess of 30 knots are the norm.
The combination of strong winds & flat water makes Green Island an ideal speed sailing destination.
The final week of June 2009 has been chosen for the Inaugural Green Island Speed Week.
Traditionally the last week of June is one of the windiest weeks of the year. 2008 saw winds averaging over 65klms per hour for the entire week. Additionally the tides for the chosen week in 2009 will allow the Northern Speed Run on the Island to be fully operational. This run works best with tides <.7m and will provide contestants with a long run in very smooth water over a sandy bottom.
Speed windsurfing is taking off in Australia & the world.
A dedicated speed world tour operates & Australia has its own web based competition.
The aim of Green Island Speed Week is to showcase the fastest GPS sailors around.
