2009 Results and Photos

25 registered sailors including Chris Lockwood (Carbon Art/KA sails) converged on Green Island for the inaugural GISW.

The usually strong & reliable winter trades however failed to show leaving the competitors reaching for their largest rigs & boards. Some had none to reach for !!

The demo gear by Carbon Art (sp 50) ,JP-a 2009 slalom & 2010 speed proto ,3 NP RSR evo2 RSSmk 3 sails was a welcome bonus for the event but was underutilised because of the light conditions.

Despite this ,5 days of competition was held with the windiest day being Monday ( peak wind speeds of ~22knots on the tower or ~18 knots on the water .)

The weather was stunning with the azure waters of Green Island providing an amazing photographic backdrop for the event .

Sailors to impress early included Tim Stockton -the young WA engineering student who's efficient use of a small rig & small board in very light winds was a sight to behold .Tim ventured out with a 5.5 NP RSR evo 2 & a 90 l F2 sx & clocked close to 30knots in around 14 knots of wind.

Watching him fly down the Northern Run chasing Cairns youngster Locky McDermott was a sight to behold ...

Peter Dans(25) sailed consistently with a borrowed 120l Exo & his KA 7.5 to post top 4 times in the 2sec peak,5x10s& 500m divisions & James Dinsmore sailed consistently well on his JP/NP slalom gear.

Of the Cairns locals GAZ racked up a huge number of NMs (plus damages bills),Kelly finally got going on the demo np rss7.0m & looked comfortably fast on his Isonic 95l.Dr Cam managed a couple of top 4 times but never really got going in the light winds.

Rosco ventured out with a fin cover on & wondered where all the drag was coming from & a couple of sailors ventured out over the reef at low tide sans gps units/harnesses-its a hell of a walk to do more than once in a day.

Dave Morehead showed committment each day with multiple rig & fin changes & lots of time on the water.Bear finally agreed to have  a go on DR Cam's 120l exo & 9m2 North Warp & for the first time all week got planing ...

Regan Oneil a Cairns local sailed well on the Sunday but left Kellie Tusler to win the women's overall by returning to work & missing the remainder of the week's competition.Kellie was wishing she had her KA 7.5 concept ...

The seabreeze graph which initially showed some green arrows for WED alarmingly had green being replaced by yellow & red ...

Chris Lockwood generously contributed his time for several inpromptu master classes covering fins, rockers, rails & batten tensioning & was the standout sailor of the week with consistently fast times & classy gybes  but by late Thursday the wind was clearly retreating not to return.

The final Results are:

  1. Overall winner Chris Lockwood who won all 4 divisions.(carbon art/ka sails)
  2. Runner up Tim Stockton (F2 /Np sails)
  3. Female winner Kellie Tusler( JP/KA sails)
  4. Junior division winner  Lachlan McDermott (f2/NP sails)
